David Ma's inspiration for the Gemdale Inner Peace project stemmed from a desire to showcase Chinese culture through modern space design. The result is a marketing center that uses modern continuous curves, the color of tea, and water wave motifs to create a contemporary Chinese scenario. The design is a testament to the enduring appeal of Chinese culture and its adaptability to modern aesthetics.
The Gemdale Inner Peace project is unique in its spatial arrangement. The overall plan relies on a structured column network, dividing the space into three separate yet continuous functional areas. The entrance serves as the axis, with a sand table area topped by grey mirrors, forming a mirror lake. Drop-like chandeliers hang from above, creating an ethereal atmosphere. The tea room in the meeting area features a ceiling that falls into the wall, scattered with round holes reminiscent of salmon roe. Tea tables with tea sets are seamlessly integrated into the modern curvilinear form.
The realization of the design was achieved through careful planning and innovative techniques. The tea room in the meeting area, for instance, features a ceiling that falls into the wall, scattered with round holes like salmon roe. Tea tables with tea sets are silently integrated into the modern curvilinear form. The book bar on the right side of the entrance contrasts with the tea room on the left, offering a charming space with a wave-shaped ceiling and wall.
The project, which started in January 2018 and was completed in July of the same year, was not without its challenges. The biggest hurdle was ensuring all necessary functions perfectly integrated with the space in the limited area. Additionally, the application and production of curved elements posed a significant challenge during construction. Despite these obstacles, the design team was able to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
In conclusion, the Gemdale Inner Peace project is a testament to David Ma's ability to blend traditional Chinese elements with modern design techniques. The project's success, as evidenced by its Silver A' Design Award, demonstrates the potential for cultural fusion in contemporary design. The Gemdale Inner Peace project is a shining example of how designers can pay homage to tradition while pushing the boundaries of modern design.
